What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the pulp (the innermost part) of the tooth. This procedure involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. Root canals are essential for saving teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

You may need a root canal if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe Tooth Pain: Persistent or severe pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure, is a common sign of an infected tooth.
  • Prolonged Sensitivity: Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers long after the stimulus is removed can indicate nerve damage within the tooth.
  • Swelling and Tenderness: Swelling, tenderness, or a small bump (abscess) on the gums near the affected tooth can be signs of infection.
  • Darkening of the Tooth: A tooth that has become discolored, often grayish or dark, may be a sign of internal damage or infection.
  • Pus or Drainage: The presence of pus or a foul taste in your mouth can indicate an abscessed tooth, requiring prompt treatment.

Our Root Canal Process

Consultation and Diagnosis

During your initial visit, Dr. Bob will perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to diagnose the problem and determine if a root canal is the appropriate treatment. We'll explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

Anesthesia and Sedation

To ensure your comfort, we administer local anesthesia to numb the affected area. For patients who are anxious or have difficulty sitting through dental procedures, sedation options are available.

Root Canal Procedure

During the procedure, Dr. Bob will create a small opening in the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp. The pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. The space is then filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent further infection.

Restoration and Follow-Up

After the root canal is complete, the tooth may need further restoration, such as a crown, to protect it from future damage. We'll schedule a follow-up visit to ensure the tooth is healing properly and provide any additional treatment if needed.

Are root canals painful?

Modern root canal treatment is designed to be virtually painless. With local anesthesia and advanced techniques, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.

How long does a root canal take?

The duration of a root canal procedure depends on the complexity of the case, but most root canals can be completed in one to two visits.

What should I expect after a root canal?

You may experience some mild soreness or sensitivity after the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. It's important to avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been restored with a crown or filling.
